THE BUILDING BLOCKS: what is this?

Q: What is this survival horror of which you speak?
A: Survival horror is apparently defined as "a subgenre of action-adventure video games inspired by horror fiction." I actually really like the explanation on wiki, but here's what I consider to be 'true' survival horror: you are an ordinary human in an extraordinary (horror) setting. It's as simple as that! You need to use strategy in terms of what weapons to use on what enemies, manage your ammunition, watch your health, and solve puzzles to find plot clues and unlock new areas. Compound Five is survival horror inspired… obviously characters will be apped who aren't "ordinary humans" and they will be able to assist each other, but the challenges presented in the game are designed for a variety of character types.

THE CORNERSTONE: where are we?

The compound itself appears to be a military complex... the sort that imitates a small town because the soldiers aren't allowed to leave base. There are training barracks but also family housing, tiny shops, shoddy playgrounds, etc etc.

It wouldn't be a terrible place to live… except it's been completely abandoned.

The base itself is on what seems to be an isolated, fragmented bit of land in a mountainous region. The place is surrounded by an electric barbed fence that's torn and twisted in places... at the very edge of sheer drop offs where you can't see the bottom. The mountain wall that the base is built against is just as steep, covered in sharp rocks and thorns; similarly, you cannot see the top.

Weather conditions are normal and innocuous enough. There is sun, clouds, rain, wind, a fairly moderate climate suggesting the midwest or perhaps northeast. It's impossible to guess. Except sometimes fog rolls in from nowhere, and sometimes it gets terribly cold at night.

The only true and certain constant in Compound Five is that you're trapped -- and you're on your own.

THE COMPOUND: while we're here...

RESOURCES

Food: At this time, the only available food is the long-shelf-life packaged food in the barracks' pantry. It's not delicious or fresh-tasting, but it's edible and filling and nutritious enough. There's canned and jarred goods like vegetables and fruit, peanut butter, mac and cheese meals, canned meat, nutrient/power bars, drink mixes, that sort of stuff. Nothing high-quality. Should anyone discover the shops farther into the "town-y" part of the base, everything fresh has spoiled. The pre-packaged food is much tastier/brand name, though.

Kitchens: The gas is still on, and it's an equipped kitchen in terms of cookware. That's about it. The water is drinkable but not tasty -- it's recommended you use the flavored vitamin mixes in the pantry.

Housing: At this time, the only available housing is in the barracks. It's... decently maintained, I suppose. The sheets aren't clean and there's a layer of dust on everything, grimy windows, etc, but at least it's beds and bathrooms. Two communal-type bathrooms per floor, the barracks are big. There's a rec room in severe disrepair. The laundry room seems only half-functional.

Electricity: Very limited. It seems that the wiring in some areas has been damaged, including sections of the barracks.

Plumbing: Yes, the showers and toilets work. The soap and things are very limited, though -- mayhaps if you raid the shops.

THE CREEPY CRAWLIES: described as discovered!

Crawlies:
- [~*~] spiders
- [~*~] rats
- [~*~] bats
- shredders
- trudgers
- [~*~] moths
- jackals

Creepies:
- [~*~] berries
- [~*~] berries
- [~*~] vines

- strike grass: grows in the training field in easily avoidable patches; it moves invisibly fast in order to cut you, and if you get cut you will become very ill, as if drugged or poisoned, and begin hallucinating in flashes. the world will darken, and you will see rats, spiders, bats, plant life. the sickness passes in 24 hours; the hallucinations taper off in about a week.
